DO YOU LOVE!
“Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15).
God expects holistic love from you. Because, even before beginning to show His affection towards you, He has poured His entire love on you.
Jesus Christ looked at Peter and not only asked whether he loved him but also asked whether he loved Him more than the disciples there. By saying “More than these” he seeks more of the love. He expects that your love towards Him should be more than how you love the worldly things, God-given mother, father, children, friends, relatives etc.
For the sake of that love, Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his own son. God valued the love of Abraham more than the sacrifice. What was the reason for God to ask whether He is being loved more than the other people? His love invited Peter for the glorious ministry. What a special call of love it is!
Peter was an illiterate fisherman but God called him to be his glorious apostle. God gave him the gifts, power and the eloquence in preaching. Further, He fed, nurtured and protected Peter for three and a half years. When he was about to be immersed in the sea, God stretched His hand and saved him. He advocated for Peter with God. He prayed earnestly so that the faith in Peter to not get diminished.
Though Peter denied Jesus Christ thrice and even cursed Him, Jesus forgave him wholeheartedly. On seeing Peter realising his sin with tears Jesus again stabilised him. He performed miracles in the life of Peter again. Jesus repeatedly asked Peter thrice whether he loved Him even though Peter had denied Him thrice already. Yes, love expects love.
If it is true that you love Him, you will have to follow His commandments. Your love towards Him is not a true one if you do not obey His commandments.
Jesus said, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in His love” (John 15:10). Dear children of God, give your first love fully to God. It is because His love is eternal love.
To meditate: “Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints” (Psalm 31:23). “I will love you, O Lord, my strength” (Psalms 18:1).
